OVERVIEW

The University of Malaya, a public research university in Kuala Lumpur, is Malaysia’s oldest university, founded in 1905. The predecessor of the university, King Edward VII College of Medicine, The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its establishment and this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous Divisions in 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur  in Malaysia, the University of Malaya is categorized into 13 faculties, 3 centers, and 2 academies.

 These include Faculty of Science, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Economics and Administration, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Business and Accountancy, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Built Environment, Faculty of Education, Centre for Foundation Studies, Cultural Centre, Sports Centre, Academy of Islamic Studies and Academy of Malay Studies. It provides great opportunities for students studying at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

Today, University of Malaya has 2,260 Staff members. There are around 19.000 students including undergraduateand graduate students at the University. Divided by 15,796 students and 3,213 international students.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Academic Requirement for admission in University of Malaya (UM)

Bachelor 

National Higher School Certificate (or an Advanced Level or the equivalent of 12 years of basic education) with the grade 80% and above. 

Or

A Diploma from recognised Institutions with at least a CGPA of 3.00.

Note: Some programmes are required applicant to undergo an interview session before being accepted

Master 

  • A Bachelor’s degree with minimum CGPA of 3 out of 4 or equivalent, in a related field  

PHD 

  • A Master’s degree with minimum CGPA of 3 out of 4 or equivalent, in a related field.

AND

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with minimum CGPA 3 out of 4, in a related field.

ACCOMMODATION

University Malaya provides both on and off campus accommodation.

On-campus

There are 13 residential colleges which provide on campus accommodation to UM students including international students under UM Student Exchange Programme. These residential colleges can accommodate more than 11,000 students. Some residential colleges provide food and accommodation for students at RM4.50 to RM12 per student per day. The others offer only accommodation at RM150 to RM360 per student per month. It depends on the halls chosen by students.

  • Students can choose either international house (for international students) or private house for rent.

  • Rental rate: RM800 – RM3000 per month.
