The National University of Malaysia known as  UKM was established in 1970. It is a public university located in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor which is at south of Kuala Lumpur has bases in Bangi, Cheras and Kuala Lumpur,. Its teaching hospital, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) is located in Cheras and also has a branch campus in Kuala Lumpur. It is among the most prestigious universities in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

Since 2010, Oxford University Innovation has been working with UKM through an established partnership arrangement to assist with commercialisation structures and processes, while also providing direct support to staff. As a result, Oxford University has made several successful licensing deals within the Malaysian industry

UKM has about 11,500 undergraduate students, and 5,477 postgraduate students of which 2,551 are foreign students from 52 different countries. Since its establishment in 1971 up till 2017, the University has produced more than 185,846 graduates; 147,228 Bachelors, 33,789 Masters and 4,829 PhDs with around 15% are International Students

National Higher School Certificate (or an Advanced Level or the equivalent of 12 years of basic education) with the grade 80% and above.

The University owns, operates and maintains a variety of on and off-campus accommodation facilities. All on-campus accommodation is administered by the Housing Unit Office. In UKM, all halls of residence are known as “Kolej” (College).

All on-campus colleges are self-contained, equipped with their own cafeterias, meeting rooms, television and prayer rooms. The room configurations range from single to multiple sharing arrangements. The University also manages a number of off-campus accommodation complexes in the adjacent townships of Bandar Baru Bangi and Kajang. These residential complexes are serviced by bus routes operated by the University. There is also a special hostel for international students called Ibu Zain International Student House.
