INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA (IIUM)

OVERVIEW

The International Islamic University Malaysia also known as IIUM, is a public university in Malaysia. Headquartered in Gombak, Selangor, IIUM has six other campuses all over Malaysia: two medical-centric campuses and a Center for Foundation Studies in Gambang, Pahang, two city campuses in Kuala Lumpur, and a language & tourism campus in Pagoh, Johor.

The university is sponsored by eight governments and the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It is distinct from the International Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan and International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh.

The university was established on 23 May 1983 and founded upon Islamic principles.Islamic values are inculcated into all disciplines. IIUM offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degrees courses at its 14 faculties.

Since 1987, IIUM has produced more than 70,000 graduates and undergraduates from more than 100 countries around the world. Out of this, 53,241 were from Malaysia while 7,530 were international students.

Today, approximately 3,000 students enroll each year. There have been, so far, approximately 27,000 students from over 40 Muslim majority countries studying in IIUM, as well as students from non-Muslim majority countries, such as Germany, Finland, China, South Korea, Japan, India, United States of America, Kashmir, Russia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

UNIVERSITY FACILITIES

This campus includes all the facilities that a modern community needs, including a mosque that can accommodate thousands, state-of-the-art sports complexes with Olympic-size swimming pools, a fully equipped library, a 24-hour medical clinic, a child-minding center, banks, post offices, restaurants, bookshops and grocery stores. A fiber-optic backbone runs through the entire campus, facilitating instant communication from one corner of the campus to another.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor Programs

  • At least three (3) principal passes in the General Certificate of Education ‘Advanced Level’ (GCE) ‘A’ Level Examination (UK Educational System) obtained in one sitting; OR
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) with a minimum of six (6) subjects obtained in one sitting; OR
  • Any other qualifications that are recognized by the Senate of the University as equivalent to the above

Note: Applicants to all undergraduate programmes must have Mathematics subject (except for Bachelor of Arabic) and two other subjects in the intended field of study.

Master Programs

 A bachelor’s degree with Honours (minimum 120 credit hours) with minimum CGPA of 3 out of 4 in relevant areas.

Ph.D. Programs

  • A relevant bachelor’s degree with good grades or any other certificates recognized to be equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and with relevant professional experience, AND
  • A relevant master’s degree with good grades 

ACCOMODATION

The students’ residential colleges in IIUM are also known as Mahallah, which is Arabic for ‘neighbourhood’. IIUM’s mahallahs are self-contained not only with services but also activities and are named after the leading companions of the Prophet s.a.w and the female Mujahidah and Syuhada.

Single Room

  • Specifically catered for postgraduate students who are considered matured and require more privacy

  • Undergraduate students may also apply if vacancies are available,

  • Rental rate for IIUM students is RM 7.00/day/person

4 person-sharing Room

  • The room accommodates four students in a compartmentalized unit. Although the four students are sharing a common door to the unit, each student is actually has his own private space/compartment for the sake of privacy.

  • Each compartment is provided with a single bed, study table and chair, cupboard, bookshelf or bookrack

  • Rental rate for IIUM students is RM 3.50/day/person
