About the university

The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) was established as a major initiative of Muslim scholars in Malaysia, with the aim of establishing an Islamic educational institution that will lead the Islamic nation in various fields of knowledge. The plan to establish the university was unveiled by Tun Mahathir Mohamad, the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia, on 12 January 1982, after consultations with the Minister of Education, senior government officials and faculty members of local universities. The university was officially established on May 20, 1983 by decision of the Government of Malaysia. The philosophy of the International Islamic University is based on the outcomes of the 1977 First World Conference on Islamic Education in Mecca.

The university’s motto is “Garden of Virtue and Knowledge,” and this is due to the university’s use of Arabic and English as educational media. It enhances its global path, so that the university integrates Islamic values from humanitarian, scientific and technical curricula.

The International Islamic University includes distinguished researchers and committed professionals to ensure the provision of high-quality education. As of October 2016, the university had about 2,000 administrative staff and about 1,980 academics, more than 80% of whom held doctoral degrees. The university includes 14 colleges, three institutes, and a center for strategic continuing education and training.
